  4.     For the past 170 years, thousands of devout Hispanic Roman
  5. Catholics have spent Good Friday tramping along roads that lead
  6. to Chimayo, a sleepy New Mexico village known for the sacred
  7. earth upon which the Santuario de Chimayo sits. Many of the
  8. pilgrims carry crosses on their journey, but this year they may
  9. feel inclined to brandish signs that say TOURISTS GO HOME! The
  10. source of their ire: New Mexico's tourism department, which is
  11. hyping the local shrine as the "Lourdes of America" in full-page
  12. ads in a dozen slick magazines, including Travel & Leisure,
  13. Holiday and Southern Living.

  15.     Worshipers are signing a petition condemning the ads,
  16. which tout the chapel and its indigenous liturgy as "just one
  17. of the many wonders . . . waiting for you," along with shopping
  18. for local weavings. Tourism official Marsha Adams acknowledges
  19. that the state should have consulted the Archdiocese of Santa
  20. Fe before launching the ad campaign, which probably will never
  21. run again. Meanwhile, in another manifestation of their
  22. protest, pilgrims say they will bar tourists from photographing
  23. their procession.
